School nursing practice requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practice with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school-age child. The school nurse is called upon to work closely with teachers, classroom assistants, office personnel, and technically advise the school health aide (SHA) to carry out a wide range of school health activities. This position is responsible to establish a leadership role, train, technically advise and support staff.
Meeting of the employeeÂ's professional responsibility will be in line with the duties described below and in coordination with the EmployeeÂ's supervisor. While the Employee is not required to report to the school or complex area superintendentÂ's office when DOE schools are closed, it is expected that the Employee will meet their professional responsibilities to the school site and program which may include attendance at scheduled meetings during non-student days.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
Assessment Assess health needs of the assigned school and/or Complex Area school community as requested Assess and evaluate the total cumulative health records and medical reports on students Organize or implement screening programs and refer students as appropriate Monitor compliance of students in regard to current immunization and communicable
disease regulations Monitor the effects of medication with regard to the studentÂ's health status and ability to benefit from the educational program Obtain health reports from medical sources and interpret these findings to school personnel Identify health barriers to student academic improvement
Planning Identify studentsÂ' health problems and plan individual programs to address actual
and potential health problems Participate in multidisciplinary teams and committees, i.e., Admission/Review/Dismissal Team, Pupil Services Team, Teacher/Student Support Team, feeder school conferences, case conferences, and intake conferences Plan, with appropriate school personnel, modifications of the school program for students with health problems Participate in the development of the Individual Education Program (IEP) by determining those health factors pertinent for the studentÂ's most appropriate educational placement, as requested by the school principal Plan health education activities based on an assessment of the health needs of the local school community Implement procedures for and execute emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses and in disaster preparedness and response
Intervention Implement protocols for emergency care for the ill and injured school population and refer them to appropriate sources of medical care Conduct physical examinations and health assessments as required Consultation on needs of the medically fragile students as required Diagnose and manage well child conditions using evidence based practice guidelines Share and interpret information, in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations, with school personnel regarding health problems of students that might affect their learning and behavior in the school environment Provide oversight and guidance to assigned school SHA regarding health room functions Collaborate with school and community agencies to provide educational, social and health services to the school population Employ the principles of learning and appropriate teaching methods to promote the optimal level of wellness for students Counsel students, parents, and school staff, assisting them toward assuming responsibility for their individual and family health Refer students, their families and faculty to community resources to meet identified needs. Provide health education and information to students and staff to assist them to be competent, self - directed consumers of health services Serve as a health and wellness content resource to assigned school personnel Provide clinical supervision and guidance to Complex Area and assigned school SHAs regarding health room functions including maintenance of student records, adequate supplies, documentation of care, and preparation of reports to DOE and DOH as required Delegate nursing care tasks, functions, and activities to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) as appropriate and in accordance with the regulations of the Hawaii Nurse Practice Act Provide information to healthcare providers, school personnel, or community agencies regarding the health of individual students in order to ensure appropriate delivery of services Ensure studentÂ's Hawaii Keiki consent information is stored in the electronic medical record (Health Office Anywhere or EPIC) that is retrievable by off-site Hawaii Keiki support staff
Evaluation Assess studentsÂ' responses to intervention and revise the plan of care as needed Evaluate accidents and injuries through a survey of accident reports or statistical analysis Prepare program reports as required Coordinate with designated DOE staff in the interview and selection process for the SHA, and provide input regarding SHA performance of clinical duties to principals for DOE performance appraisals as required Provide indirect clinical supervision to DOE staff as appropriate for delegated nursing care Engage in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices Contribute to the formation of health related policies, goals, and objectives for the complex area
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Provide training, support, and professional development for the complex area school SHAs, as required, in collaboration with relevant UH, DOE and DOH partnerships Work with school personnel in promoting a physical and psychological environment conducive to effective performance of students and staff Serve as liaison for institutions offering field experiences for students in health sciences professions from local colleges, non-profits, and businesses Serve as the Complex Area liaison to the Department of Health Collaborate with agencies in the control of communicable diseases
Other Complies with all legal requirements and company policies Performs other duties as assigned QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education/Training:
Minimum: A bachelors degree in nursing Possession of a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Hawai'i BLS/ Health Care Provider certification
Preferred:
A graduate degree in nursing and/or eligible for/license as an APRN in Hawai'i Possession of an APRN and/or APRN Rx license in the State of Hawai'i Certification as a nurse practitioner in area of specialty by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or other nationally recognized certification Eligible for or certified as a School Nurse by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses
Experience:
Minimum: 1 year of experience in community based health settings, school nursing or pediatric nursing Knowledge of state medical information release procedures and laws Knowledge of HIPAA rules, regulations, and compliance Knowledge of OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens
Preferred:
Experience working as a school nurse or in a school based health service setting Knowledge of FERPA rules, regulations, and compliance
