OVERVIEW

This position is located at the Clinical Laboratory Services Department, Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, serves as a Medical Laboratory Technician and performs technical procedures across all sections of the laboratory.

NOTE: Salary will be increased by the applicable cost-of-living allowance (COLA), which is subject to change without notice. KEY REQUIREMENTS

Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period. DUTIES:

  • Receive speci! mens from clinics, and other Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air! Force Department of Defense (DOD) supported treatment facilities for testing.
  • Ensure safety, infection control and proper procedures for handling blood and blood borne pathogens are followed.
  • Determine the appropriateness of incoming specimens (timing of specimen collection, potential interference and proper specimen type).
  • Review, edit and processes final laboratory results on the Composite Health Care System . QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS:
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR : This position has a selective placement factor needed in order to qualify. The actual Selective Placement Factor is: a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent, to perform the various complexity levels of testing as established by the DOD Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP). Failure to possess this factor WILL result in an ineligible rating. Possession of ! the factor must be verifiable via your resume.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate one year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience operating, calibrating, maintaining and troubleshooting all chemistry and hematology, urinanalysis and microbiology analyzers.
  • Experience performing a variety of hematology and limited microbiological testing.
  • Experience acting as liaison with physicians and other hospital profess! ional staff and assist in resolving problems associated with laboratory! results..
EDUCATION:
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: One full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

REQUIREMENTS:
Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.

Incument is subject to a Â"floaterÂ" assignment, filling in wherever needed, and regularly having the responsibility for the full range of laboratory work on evenings, nights, and weekend duty.

Physical Demands : Long periods of standing, bending or reaching for supplies or materials and lifting moderately heavy items such as tabletop, centrifuges and reagent containers.

Work Environment : The work involves exposure to moderate risk s or discomforts which requires safety precautions (contagious diseases, caustic reagents, noxious fumes, flammable liquids and low level radiation.

The in! cumbent must use protective equipment (clothing, gear, laboratory coats, fume hoods, safety goggles, aprons, gloves and shields).
